Is this the sky Beckmann yearned for? Right here, in front of the Petrikirche of Rostock, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe. The Petrikirche isn’t just a church; it’s a survivor, a testament to the enduring spirit of Rostock. This magnificent structure has its roots deep in the 13th century. The first mention of a church on this very spot dates back to 1252, a testament to its long and storied past.

The Petrikirche, built in the distinctive Brick Gothic style, bore witness to centuries of Rostock’s history. It once boasted a tower that soared 127 meters – imagine that, towering over everything in the cityscape. But fate, as it often does, had other plans. In 1543, a thunderbolt struck the tower, reducing it to rubble. Undeterred, the people of Rostock rebuilt. By 1578, a new polygonal spire graced the skyline, reaching a still-impressive 117 meters. This landmark, visible for miles around, served as a beacon to those at sea and on land alike.

But the Petrikirche’s trials were far from over. In 1942, during World War II, bombing raids ravaged Rostock. The Petrikirche, once again, fell victim to the ravages of war, its spire collapsing under the onslaught. Yet, even amidst the ruins, the spirit of the Petrikirche, and of Rostock itself, refused to be extinguished. Slowly and painstakingly, the rebuilding began. Today, the Petrikirche stands tall once more, a symbol of resilience and hope. Though its tower now reaches a more modest height, it is crowned once again with its distinctive copper spire, rebuilt thanks to the generosity of ordinary people. Take a moment to appreciate the intricate stained-glass windows in the choir. Designed in the 1960s by local artist Lothar Mannewitz, they depict scenes from the life of St. Peter, a vibrant testament to art and faith.
