The year is 1584. Imagine the bustling street leading into Florence on Assumption Day. A humble well, tucked away near the villa dei Pasquali, becomes an unexpected focal point. It is here, at the Oratorio della Madonna del Pozzo, that our story unfolds. The Oratorio della Madonna del Pozzo stands as a testament to a miracle that captivated Florence. Legend has it that on that fateful Assumption Day, an image of the Madonna and Child was discovered behind a wall near the well. Two Franciscan friars knelt before the image. As they prayed, they witnessed a sight that could only be described as miraculous: withered lilies in a forgotten garland miraculously bloomed again! News of the miraculous event spread like wildfire. Soon, the Oratorio della Madonna del Pozzo became a beacon of hope and faith. People from neighboring villages and even distant cities like Lucca and Bologna flocked to the site. They sought blessings and cures from the Madonna del Pozzo. The offerings left by the faithful, amounting to a staggering eight hundred scudi in just two months. This windfall was used to support the less fortunate – dowries for poor girls, masses at the Brozzi parish, and other charitable acts. The Oratorio della Madonna del Pozzo that we see today was erected in the 17th century. An elegant facade welcomes visitors with its triangular tympanum and arched window. Inside, the oratory evokes a sense of serenity. The wooden beams of the ceiling and the simplicity of the altar draw your gaze to the artwork within. Look for the painting by Alfonso Boschi – “Saints Martino and Carlo Borromeo in Oration with the Parish Church of Brozzi in the Background.” At its heart lies a 15th-century fresco. It depicts the Madonna and Child within a niche of polychrome marble. The fresco, though retouched over the centuries, still whispers of the artistic style of Paolo Schiavo. The Oratorio della Madonna del Pozzo stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. The story reminds us that even in the unlikeliest of places, miracles can occur, leaving an indelible mark on history and the hearts of believers.
