Sanyuan West Bridge

Spanning the bustling northeastern stretch of Beijing’s 3rd Ring Road stands the Sanyuan Bridge. A vital artery in the city’s circulatory system, it has witnessed the ebb and flow of Beijing life since 1984. Sanyuan Bridge isn’t just a bridge. Initially, Sanyuan Bridge interlinked three major passageways: the Airport Expressway, Jingshun Road (China National Highway 101), and the 3rd Ring Road. This old road now serves as a service route to the modern Airport Expressway. As Beijing grew, so did the traffic. In the 1990s, the bridge underwent an expansion. Another flyover section was added to accommodate the increasing flow of vehicles from the eastern 3rd Ring Road directly onto the Airport Expressway. What many people don’t know is the incredible story of the bridge’s reconstruction in 2015. The original Sanyuan Bridge was demolished and replaced in a mere 43 hours. This incredible feat was accomplished using a prefabricated replacement bridge. This single, enormous structure was installed in place of the original, minimizing disruption to the city’s frenetic pace.
