Did Maekawa, here in Chiba, ever have a bustling train station? No, Maekawa in Chiba is not to be confused with Maekawa Station in Nagaoka, Niigata. That Maekawa Station, designed by architect Kunio Maekawa, sits along the Shin’etsu Main Line. It opened its doors on August 15, 1964. Kunio Maekawa, born in 1905, significantly shaped modern Japanese architecture. He even worked with Le Corbusier in Paris, contributing to iconic projects like Villa Savoye. Back in Japan, Maekawa designed community centers and championed concrete construction. His notable works include the Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall and the Saitama Cultural Centre. He also designed Japan’s pavilions for the 1958 Brussels and the 1964-65 New York World’s Fairs. So, while our Maekawa in Chiba might not have a famous train station, the name carries a legacy of architectural innovation thanks to Kunio Maekawa.
