This church, dedicated to Blessed Elisabetta Vendramini, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of compassion, run by the Terziarie Francescane Elisabettine. These nuns, named after the very woman the Chiesa della Beata Elisabetta Vendramini honors, have dedicated their lives to caring for elderly women. The story of how this church came to be is intertwined with another group. The Company of San Benedetto Bianco, a charitable brotherhood, originally resided here. Founded in 1357 at the San Salvatore Monastery in Camaldoli, they later moved to Santa Maria Novella. Sadly, urban planning forced them to leave their oratory in 1869. The demolition of the old cemetery near the Basilica of San Lorenzo, due to the expansion of Via degli Avelli, led them to this new home. Today, the Chiesa della Beata Elisabetta Vendramini welcomes you with a beautiful gabled facade. A message, “Circa Benedictum Corona Fratrum,” meaning “Around Benedict, the Crown of Brothers,” adorns the pediment. This inscription speaks volumes about the brotherhood that once called this place home. Inside, simplicity reigns. A single nave extends under a barrel vault, its whitewashed walls accented by arches of pietra serena, a local sandstone. What appear to be side aisles from the outside are actually functional spaces, including a large auditorium on the left. The Chiesa della Beata Elisabetta Vendramini, though modest in design, carries a powerful message. It’s a reminder that even amidst the grandeur of Florence, compassion and service shine brightly.
