Feverish and delirious, Paul Levi fell from his window in Berlin. Now, we stand at Paul-Levi-Platz. It is named to honor this influential political leader.

Paul Levi’s life is a gripping tale. He was born in 1883. His story involves political activism, legal battles and a tragic end.

Levi was a prominent figure in early 20th-century German politics. He started in the Social Democratic Party of Germany SPD. Later, he became a key leader in the Communist Party of Germany KPD.

Levi’s journey began in Hechingen. He came from a middle-class Jewish family. His sharp mind led him to law. In 1906, he joined the SPD. He aligned with Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. These were influential left-wing figures.

His legal skills were soon in demand. He defended Luxemburg in 1914. She was charged with inciting soldiers to disobedience. This shows his commitment to his beliefs.

In 1916, Levi moved to Switzerland. He joined the Zimmerwald Left and the Spartacus League. This league later became the KPD. His involvement marked a shift towards communism.

After the German Revolution failed in 1919, tragedy struck. Luxemburg, Liebknecht and Leo Jogiches were murdered. Levi then took charge of the KPD.

Levi led the German delegation to Moscow in 1920. This was at the 2nd World Congress of the Communist International. Differences over revolutionary tactics led to his resignation in 1921.

Expelled from the Communist Party, Levi didn’t disappear. He rejoined the SPD in 1922. He became a Reichstag member in 1924. He also led the party’s left wing. Levi edited “Socialist Politics and Economics.” This journal merged with “Class Struggle.”

His legal skills remained sharp. In 1929, he defended Josef Bornstein. Bornstein was accused of defaming a public prosecutor. Levi won the case.

However, tragedy struck again. On February 9, 1930, Levi died. He fell from his Berlin window while ill.

The Reichstag commemorated him. However, the Communist and Nazi parties representatives left in protest. This shows the complex political landscape of the time.

Carl von Ossietsky admired Levi. He said Levi was an incurable outsider. He valued strong independent individuals in revolutionary politics.

Paul Levi was complex. He was a lawyer, a revolutionary and a leader. His life ended tragically. His ideas and actions continue to spark debate. Standing here at Paul-Levi-Platz, remember his impact on German politics. His story reflects the turbulent times.
