Imagine, for a moment, stepping back in time to the Roman settlement of Cemenelum. This is Cimiez. It was once the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes province.

Today, Cimiez is a residential area in Nice. It is also a place rich in history and culture. Let’s explore some of the remarkable sights.

First, we have the Jardin du Monastère de Cimiez. This garden is the oldest in Nice. Franciscan monks originally used it as a vegetable garden and orchard. They grew vines, fruit trees and medicinal plants. Today, you’ll find citrus, orange, lemon and mandarin trees. Mediterranean species like olive and cypress trees dot the landscape. The garden still features its original layout. A central well and pergolas covered in climbing roses add to its charm.

Next is the Cimiez Monastery. It was founded in the 16th century. Inside the church, you can view three major works by Louis Bréa. These are the Pietà, the Crucifixion and the Deposition of the Cross. The monastery also has a 16th-century cloister.

The Cimiez Archaeological Museum houses artifacts from Cemenelum. The museum serves as the gateway to the ancient site. Here, you can see Roman baths from the 3rd century. Sections of Roman roads are also visible. A residential area with shops and a paleo-Christian baptistery from the 5th century are present.

Nearby, is the Roman amphitheater. Its construction began in the 2nd century. Concerts and shows are held here during the warmer months.

Cimiez also boasts the Musée Matisse. It is housed in the Palais Gubernatis. This palace was built in 1680. The museum showcases the artistic evolution of Henri Matisse. You’ll find paintings, drawings, sculptures and more.

The Musée National Marc Chagall is also in Cimiez. It features seventeen paintings illustrating the Biblical Message.

The Regina Palace is another notable building in Cimiez. It was once a hotel built in 1896. Queen Victoria stayed here during her winter visits.

As you wander through Cimiez, you will notice the Belle Époque architecture. Aristocrats from all over Europe favored this area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Boulevard de Cimiez is lined with beautiful palaces and villas.

Cimiez is also home to a cemetery next to the monastery. The painters Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy are buried here. Roger Martin du Gard, a Nobel laureate in literature is also buried here.
