A stone sentinel stands guard. It’s the Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier. This spot offers a glimpse into Salzburg’s past. But it also reveals a stunning view of its present.

The Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier was once part of Salzburg’s defense system. These fortifications secured the north side of Kapuzinerberg. They stretched from the Linzertor gates to Franziskischlössl. They went further to the Gnigler Schanze.

The Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier and its larger counterpart protected the Linzertor gates. They guarded the bastions and outworks from above. Imagine enemies trying to attack. The Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier provided a strategic advantage. It was a high-level defense point for cannons.

This Wehranlage connected to the Linzertor gates. Soldiers used the Soldatenstiege from the barracks. They reached the Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier. From there they continued to the Großer Linzertor-Kavalier.

The Lodronschen Stadtbefestigung included the Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier. After the Gnigler Kavaliere were abandoned the Linzertorkavaliere got new names. People called them “Upper” and “Lower”. Some also used “Großer” and “Kleiner Kavalier”.

Today the Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier serves a different purpose. Its steep rock face is now a climbing route. It’s called “City Wall Salzburg”. Climbers challenge themselves on this historic structure.

From the Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier the view is impressive. You can see the eastern part of the right-bank Old Town. St. Sebastian’s Church and its cemetery are visible. The surrounding buildings add to the panorama. The Andräviertel stretches out behind. To the left of the Salzach, you can see the northern part of the Mönchsberg.

You can reach this vantage point by different routes. The Stefan-Zweig-Weg from Linzer Gasse is one way. Another route is via the Imbergstiege from Steingasse. Both paths lead to the Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier.

Take a moment to appreciate the history of the Kleiner Linzertor-Kavalier. It was a vital part of Salzburg’s defenses. It now offers recreation and stunning views.
