Did Thomas FitzSimons, a signer of the Constitution, ever imagine his name gracing a grand, gothic-style junior high? Here stands Thomas FitzSimons Junior High School, a true testament to Philadelphia’s rich history and architectural prowess. This imposing structure, completed in 1926, dominates the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. Its soaring arched windows, intricate stone carvings, and turreted towers evoke a sense of old-world charm. Thomas FitzSimons Junior High School isn’t just a building; it’s a time capsule, holding within its walls decades of stories, laughter, and learning. Designed by Irwin T. Catharine, the School District of Philadelphia’s chief architect, the building shares a striking resemblance to four other junior high schools across the city: Gillespie, Tilden, Penn Treaty, and Shoemaker. Interestingly, of these architectural quintuplets, Thomas FitzSimons Junior High School is the only one no longer operating as a school. Initially occupying half a city block, the school eventually expanded to encompass the entire block, replacing the rowhouses that once stood there. Before Thomas FitzSimons Junior High School, this site housed the Francis Hopkinson School, later renamed Belview School. The current structure, built in 1926, was a much larger and more modern replacement, reflecting the booming population of the neighborhood. Thomas FitzSimons Junior High School has witnessed a dynamic history. It served as a coeducational middle school and later, a school exclusively for boys. The school also spent time under the management of Victory Schools Inc., before returning to the Philadelphia School District’s control. Sadly, after years of service, budgetary issues and political unrest led to its closure in 2013, one of 24 schools shuttered that year. Despite its closure, the building retains its stately presence, a monument to the past and a symbol of the ever-changing landscape of Philadelphia’s educational system. Thomas FitzSimons Junior High School stands as a reminder of the importance of preserving our historical and architectural heritage, even as time marches on.
