Why this sense of peace in the heart of bustling Florence? You might be surprised to find it here, in front of the Chiesa della Beata Maria Vergine Madre della Divina Provvidenza. This modern church, completed in 1959, holds a fascinating story. It all began in 1867 when the Barnabite Fathers, a Catholic religious order, purchased a villa nearby. They transformed it into a school named “La Querce,” a tribute to a miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary at Le Cure in 1520. Decades later, in 1940, they built a small chapel for the local community. As the parish grew, the need for a larger church arose. This led to the construction of the Chiesa della Beata Maria Vergine Madre della Divina Provvidenza, designed by the architect Aurelio Cetica. As you gaze upon its facade, notice the thirteen niches, each housing a statue of Christ and his apostles. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a bright, spacious nave, bathed in natural light streaming through large windows. The highlight is the chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Provvidenza, featuring a touching rendition of the Madonna and Child. This work, crafted by Benedetto Fraccalvieri, is a faithful copy of a 16th-century masterpiece. The Chiesa della Beata Maria Vergine Madre della Divina Provvidenza is more than just a church. It is a testament to faith, resilience, and community spirit. Its modern design stands in quiet contrast to the ancient grandeur of Florence, offering a moment of serene contemplation.
