In 1801, a seed of faith was planted. This seed grew into the Stapleton Union African Methodist Episcopal Church. It stands before you today as a testament to resilience and community. The Stapleton Union African Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest African American church on Staten Island. It’s one of four Black congregations established before 1900. The church officially joined the Union Church of Africans Conference in 1838. This was under the leadership of Reverend Isaac Barney, a key figure in the church’s history. Reverend Barney’s final resting place is right here on the church grounds. He is buried near the right-rear corner of the Stapleton Union AME Church. The current building is the third structure erected on this very spot. Each brick and beam whispers tales of generations past. The Stapleton Union African Methodist Episcopal Church has witnessed two centuries of change. Through it all, the church has remained a beacon of hope. It continues to serve the community. The church’s impact extends far beyond its walls. In 2014 alone, its food pantry provided over 170,000 meals. The soup kitchen serves more than 14,000 meals annually. A kid’s café after-school program offers nourishment and education. It provides complete meals, runs a food pantry for children, and promotes healthy eating habits.
