The air hangs heavy with incense as you step into the grand hall of the Jōdo-shū Honganji Temple. The Jōdo-shū Honanji Temple is the head temple of the Jōdo Shinshū sect of Buddhism. It is one of the largest and most important Buddhist temples in Japan. The temple was founded by Shinran Shōnin, a Buddhist reformer who lived in the 13th century. Shinran’s teachings emphasized the importance of absolute faith in Amida Buddha. The temple is a masterpiece of Japanese architecture. It is a place of great beauty and serenity. One of the temple’s most impressive features is the Amidado, a hall dedicated to Amida Buddha. The hall is a magnificent structure, with a three-story roof and expansive interior space. The heart of the Amidado is a revered wooden image of Amida Buddha, flanked by masterful portraits of six Pure Land Masters: Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu from India, Tanluan, Taocho, and Shandao from China, and Genshin from Japan. The images of Honen and Prince Shōtoku, a major patron of Japanese Buddhism, are prominently displayed on either side. In the 16th century, a powerful warlord named Oda Nobunaga ordered the destruction of the temple. The temple was rebuilt in 1591 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a powerful figure who united Japan under his rule. It is a testament to the resilience of the Jōdo Shinshū sect, and the enduring importance of faith. You’ll also be impressed by the Founder’s Hall, or Agoeido, which features a magnificent wooden image of Shinran Shonin himself. The Shoin is a complex of rooms decorated with exquisite wall and screen paintings. The Shoin complex is largely divided into the Taimensho, or Main Audience Hall, and the Shiro Shoin, a suite of three beautifully decorated rooms. The Karamon, or “All Day Gate”, is an elegant four-pillared gate, that visitors find themselves spending entire days admiring. Its elaborate carvings showcase the artistry of the late 16th century. The temple also boasts a number of other treasures, including the Hiunkaku, or “Flying Cloud Pavilion”, one of Kyoto’s three famed pavilions. The Honganji Temple is a place of peace and beauty. It is a place where people can find solace and inspiration.
