“Miracles still happen” are the words whispered among devotees of the San Juan de Los Lagos Church. This sacred place stands as a testament to faith. It embodies resilience and the enduring grace of the Virgin Mary.

The story of San Juan de Los Lagos Church begins far away. It starts in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico. Spanish missionaries placed an image of the Virgin Mary there. They hoped to deepen the parishioners’ devotion.

In 1623, a family of acrobats was performing. Tragedy struck when their youngest daughter fell. The fall resulted in her death. An indigenous caretaker placed the Virgin Mary image on the child. Miraculously, the child returned to life. This event ignited devotion to Our Lady of San Juan. The devotion spread far beyond Mexico.

In 1949, Reverend Jose Maria Azpiazu brought this devotion to San Juan, Texas. He commissioned a statue mirroring the original. It was placed in the San Juan Chapel. The community needed a larger space. A new church and shrine were dedicated to the Virgin of San Juan in 1954.

Disaster struck again sixteen years later. During a Mass, a small plane crashed. It crashed into the roof of the shrine. The shrine was destroyed by the explosion. Yet, only the pilot died. The statue and the sacrament were rescued. Many saw this as a divine protection.

The rebuilt shrine gained international recognition. In 1999, Pope John Paul II gave it the title of Basilica. Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle draws many. Pilgrims seek spiritual enrichment here. The shrine is among the most frequented Marian shrines in the United States. Every year, over a million people visit.

The Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle started small. In 1920, Reverend Alfonso Jalbert established a wooden chapel. It was a mission church linked to St. Margaret Mary Church in Pharr, Texas.

After the 1970 plane crash, the dining hall became a temporary sanctuary. By 1972, a new church construction was underway. A grand dedication took place in 1980. Cardinal Medeiros and Bishop Fitzpatrick attended. So did a crowd of 50000.

In 1998, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops honored the shrine. They gave Our Lady of San Juan del Valle the title of National Shrine. The following year, Pope John Paul II elevated it. He bestowed the honor of a minor Basilica.

Visiting San Juan de Los Lagos Church offers more than history. It provides a chance to witness living faith. You can attend weekday Masses or Sunday services. Confessions are available throughout the week. The gift shop provides devotional items. The Basilica Hotel offers accommodations for pilgrims.

The story of the San Juan de Los Lagos Church is one of faith. It shows resilience and devotion. It reminds us that even in tragedy, hope remains. Miracles, after all, still happen here.
