The Freeman Wilkinson Plaque commemorates a soldier who fought at the Battle of San Jacinto. The plaque, erected in 1936 by the State of Texas, stands within the San Jacinto Battle Site Park. Freeman Wilkinson was a member of Captain Thomas H. McIntire’s company during that pivotal battle. This battle, fought on April 21, 1836, secured Texan independence. Wilkinson survived the battle, only to pass away a few years later in 1839 in Lynchburg. He was then laid to rest near his comrades who fell during the battle. The Freeman Wilkinson Plaque serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary men in extraordinary times. It stands as a testament to Wilkinson’s contribution to Texas’ fight for freedom.
