In 1967 amidst racial tension Reverend William Brown founded Trinity Community Church. He saw a critical need for support for at-risk African American youth. Opportunities were scarce. Trinity Community Church was born from this urgent need. It wasn’t just a church. It was a lifeline a beacon of hope.
Trinity Community Church started as a community center on Erato Street called the Upper Room. It was a haven for young people a place to gather. It offered activities a coffee house. There was even a day camp a training institute and a counseling office. The church also acted as a network connecting other churches to aid the poor. Reverend Brown understood the lack of summer resources for youth. He created summer camps summer camping programs. Educational and literacy programs youth clubs even a food bank became vital parts of Trinity Community Church.
Trinity Community Church expanded its mission. It moved to the Hollygrove neighborhood in 1998 under the leadership of Reverend Brown’s son Kevin. Trinity Community Church wasn’t just about faith. It was about community empowerment and social change. The church worked tirelessly alongside its neighbors. It rebuilt and painted homes cleaned vacant lots and held Family Fun Days. It advocated for its community and even helped establish Level Ground Community Church.
Trinity Community Church’s influence extended far beyond its walls. It incubated and built the capacity of numerous organizations. These included Hollygrove Farm and Market the Hollygrove Seniors Group Pressing on Basketball Ministry Carrollton-Hollygrove CDC and Healthy Start. These groups all served the marginalized populations of Hollygrove. Trinity Community Church created a powerful network of support. It served not only the spiritual needs of the community but also its social and economic needs.
Today Trinity Community Church continues its legacy of service. It provides after-school programs summer camps career and college preparation and internships. It empowers under-resourced youth equipping them to succeed becoming leaders in New Orleans. Trinity Community Church’s journey is one of unwavering commitment to the youth and families of New Orleans.
