Ten sports enthusiasts gathered in 1906. They met at the Honka inn in Döhren. Their goal was to found a sports club. They aimed to popularize rugby in Döhren. This marked the birth of VfR Döhren 06. Initially known as Sportverein Strauss Döhren it quickly became a local landmark. Döhren was then a village outside Hanover. Many people moved there because of industrial growth. The Döhrener Wolle textile mill attracted many new residents. This rapid growth transformed the former village. Their first rugby match was a 3-21 loss. This loss against SV Odin did not discourage them. They improved quickly. In 1912 they found a home on a swampy plot. This was in Olbersstraße. It needed much work. World War I interrupted their progress. In 1919 the club was revived. They renamed themselves Verein für Rasenspiele e V Hannover-Döhren. An attempt to merge with the Favorit Wülfel football team failed. VfR Döhren 06 focused on rugby. The 1920s saw a focus on youth development. This led to two German Rugby Championships in 1933 and 1934. This was a huge success. After World War II a rugby team formed in 1946. It was part of the British occupation zone’s NTSG Döhren. Players from VfR FC Schwalbe and 06 Döhren were part of the new team. On June 29 1947 a new beginning was documented. FC Schwalbe gained independence. VfR and 06 Döhren players united. They created Verein für Rasenspiele 1906 under chairman Fritz Bock. A long period of rebuilding and development followed. Their efforts culminated in a 10-5 victory. This victory in 1959 over RG Heidelberg secured their third German Rugby Championship title. The legacy of VfR Döhren 06 endures. It’s a testament to the dedication of those ten original sports enthusiasts. Their vision shaped a club with a rich history and continued success. Their story is one of resilience determination and sporting excellence. It stands as a symbol of Döhren’s vibrant past. VfR Döhren 06 continues to thrive in the Hanover community.
