Dreamed of seeing your favorite band or witnessing an Olympic event? You might just do both at Wukesong Arena. This multipurpose indoor arena stands tall in Beijing. It is ready to host a wide array of events.
Wukesong Arena initially rose to prominence for the 2008 Summer Olympics. It hosted basketball preliminaries and finals. The groundbreaking took place on March 29, 2005. Construction concluded on January 11, 2008. It quickly became an iconic landmark.
Originally known as the Wukesong Culture & Sports Center, its name has changed several times. It was once called MasterCard Center. Later, it became LeSports Center, then Huaxi Live. Since 2017, it has been known as Cadillac Arena.
The Wukesong Arena boasts a seating capacity of 19000. Its area covers 63000 square meters. It features a flexible ice hockey rink. A Finnish company, Vepe Oy, designed it in November 2016. This adaptability allows the venue to host diverse events.
The arena played a role in the 2022 Winter Olympics. It hosted some ice hockey matches. This further cemented its status as a premier sporting venue.
Beijing Wukesong Cultural & Sports Co. Ltd. built the stadium. Several shareholders contributed to this project. They included Zhongguancun CENCONS Group. Haidian State-owned Assets Investment Co. Ltd also contributed. Beijing Urban Construction Group Co. Ltd, Beijing Urban Construction Co. Ltd and the Tianhong Group were also involved. After the Olympics, the arena became a part of Beijing’s Olympic legacy. It provides a space for cultural, sports, and commercial activities.
MasterCard Worldwide acquired the naming rights in 2011. This changed the name to MasterCard Center. In 2015, LeTV Sports secured naming rights. The venue was then known as LeSports Center. After LeTV Sports closed, it was briefly named Huaxi Live. Cadillac then acquired naming rights in 2017.
In 2016, the Kontinental Hockey League announced its Beijing expansion team. The team would play at the arena. Anssi Salmela scored the first goal in the arena’s first hockey game. His team, Kunlun Red Star, won 6–3.
The Wukesong Arena is also Beijing’s biggest entertainment venue. Many international artists have performed here. Avril Lavigne, Kanye West and Beyoncé have all graced its stage. Super Junior, Backstreet Boys and Usher have also performed here.
But it is not just music. The Wukesong Arena has also hosted various sporting events. NBA Global Games have been held here. The NHL China Games and UFC Fight Night also took place here. The FIBA Basketball World Cup held several matches here too.
Interestingly, a baseball field once stood next to the arena. It hosted baseball events during the 2008 Summer Olympics. After the games, it was demolished to make way for a shopping mall.
