Wafting through the air are whispers of a tragedy, the Highland Towers collapse. These three blocks of 12-story apartments were built in the late 1970s in Ulu Kelang. They stood at the western base of a steep hill.
Let’s journey back to December 11, 1993. After ten days of continuous rainfall, Block 1 of the Highland Towers tragically collapsed. The Highland Towers Tragedy claimed the lives of 48 people including men, women and children.
Before the Highland Towers were built, a small stream flowed through the site. A pipe system was installed to divert this stream. Heavy rainfall overloaded the pipes with water and mud before the collapse. The pipes burst and the soil absorbed the excess water. A landslide occurred destroying the retaining walls and foundation of Block 1. According to witnesses a loud crack was heard when the steel collapsed under the weight of the landslide. The landslide pushed the block forward causing it to collapse.
Rescue workers searched for survivors. A note tied to a wire was found with the message “Help us, we are still alive.” Sadly no survivors were found. The rescue operations ended after 12 days. A multinational rescue team recovered 48 bodies from the building. Only two survivors were rescued: an Indonesian mother and her 18-month-old child.
After the collapse, all tenants were evacuated due to safety concerns. The two remaining Highland Towers stood eerily on the grounds. The grounds of the Highland Towers were easily accessible. The basement of the tower was dark and spooky. The entrance was overgrown with weeds and vandalized walls. The staircases had no railings.
The Highland Towers became a place where time stood still. Diaries and address books dating back to 1993 were found. A Korean newspaper from December 2, 1993 was discovered. It was left untouched after its owners moved out.
Looters stripped the Highland Towers of its metals. Electrical wiring, window frames, balcony railings and elevator doors were removed and sold. Most rooms were empty, but some items were left behind. A jar of honey, a name card holder, newspaper scraps, a slipper and some lacy undergarments were among the lost items.
The Highland Towers collapse sparked concerns about high-rise structure safety. It highlighted the duties of authorities and building owners to protect citizens. Stricter norms and regulations were implemented in Malaysia as a result of the tragedy.
Some say the Highland Towers were built on a cemetery. They say the spirits of the deceased were angered by the construction. Others believe the building’s collapse was caused by supernatural phenomena. But authorities say the collapse was due to structural flaws and soil erosion.
The Highland Towers earned a reputation as a paranormal hotspot. People would visit the area hoping to capture supernatural activity. The remains of the Highland Towers were demolished in June 2019. It was hoped that the demolition would help bury the tragic past.
