Ever wonder how a humble school became a home for city administration? That’s the story of Coddington Hall. It stands as a testament to preservation and adaptation.

Let’s step back to 1908. Coddington Hall first opened its doors as Coddington School. It was a three-story building. The school was named to honor William Coddington. He was Quincy’s earliest benefactor.

Time marched on and Coddington School played its role. But buildings evolve. Coddington Hall needed a new chapter.

A complete renovation took place. The exterior was carefully restored to its original glory. Today, Coddington Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places. It now houses school administration offices. The city’s planning and information technology departments also call it home.

The renovation wasn’t just about looks. It was about preserving architectural value. Kawneer’s OptiQ AA5450 Series Windows were used. These windows preserved the building’s historic appearance. They also enhanced thermal performance and functionality.

Wessling Architects led the design. Nauset Construction was the general contractor. North East Energy Control Systems handled the window installation.

The project cost about $10 million. The renovation included restoring exterior masonry. A new slate roof was installed. Copper gutters were added. New windows were also installed.

Inside, the building got new offices and meeting spaces. New mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems were installed. The building also got new utility services. Landscaping, site paving and exterior lighting were updated.

Significant interior features were preserved. These included a central entrance hall. Large central corridors on the first and second levels were also kept. Custom door and window moldings were restored. Wood doors with transoms were refurbished. Handrails, wainscoting and high ceilings were all carefully maintained.

Coddington Hall stands as a reminder. It is a reminder that old buildings can have new lives. This historic school now serves the city in a modern way. It blends history and progress seamlessly. It is a great example of adaptive reuse.

Coddington Hall received the Preservation Massachusetts Paul E. Tsongas Award in 2015. It is a symbol of Quincy’s commitment to its past and its future.
