Founded in 1904, Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin stands as a testament to Brooklyn’s rich Jewish history. The story of Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin begins long before this building stood here. It started as Yeshiva Tiferes Bachurim in Brownsville. Jewish immigrants from the Lower East Side established it. Imagine these families seeking to create a new home for Torah learning.

The year 1914 marked a turning point for Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin. At Meir Berlin’s suggestion the yeshiva was renamed to honor his brother Chaim Berlin. Chaim Berlin was the Chief Rabbi of Moscow and later Jerusalem. He had also served in Valozhyn. This connection to a prominent rabbinical figure elevated the yeshiva’s reputation.

In 1940, Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin acquired a new home. Thanks to Jacob Rutstein’s philanthropy, the yeshiva purchased the former Municipal Bank Building at Pitkin and Stone Avenues. This seven-story building provided ample space for the growing student body.

Leading Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin required dedicated individuals. Yaakov Moshe Shurkin served as the founding rosh yeshiva. He guided the yeshiva from 1936 until his death in 1963. Yitzchok Hutner joined the faculty and gave monthly lectures. After Hutner’s death, Aaron Schechter took over. When Schechter died in 2023, Shlomo Halioua briefly led. After Halioua died, his son Yosef and son-in-law Tzvi Fink jointly took over.

Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin has grown significantly. It now includes a preschool, elementary school, high school, beth midrash, and Kollel Gur Aryeh. Total enrollment approaches 2,000 students. The mesivta serves as a feeder school for the beth midrash. For a time, the mesivta was located in Far Rockaway. Shlomo Freifeld headed the Mesivta at that time.

Avigdor Miller and Shlomo Freifeld served as mashgiach ruchani. Shlomo Carlebach also held this position.

Many notable alumni have emerged from Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin. These include rabbis and educators who have served in communities worldwide. Shlomo Carlebach a former mashgiach ruchani of Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin became a renowned rabbi. Aharon Feldman became rosh yeshiva of Ner Israel Rabbinical College. David Weiss Halivni became a respected Talmudic scholar. Yaakov Perlow became the Novominsker Rebbe of Borough Park.

Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin also operates a summer location. Camp Morris is located in Sullivan County New York. The Yeshiva also runs Chaim Day Camp.

In the 1920s, Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin experienced significant growth. A groundbreaking event was held to secure America’s Jewish future. Rav Meir Shapiro, recently arrived from Poland, was among the dignitaries.

Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin faced challenges during the Great Depression. Plans for a new building were abandoned. Despite these setbacks, the yeshiva persevered.

Today Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin continues to thrive. It remains a vital center for Torah learning and Jewish education. Its alumni continue to make a difference in the world.
