Whispering ancient beeches stand tall in Bois du Laerbeek-Laarbeekbos. This Brussels forest isn’t just a green space. It’s a living testament to centuries of history and nature’s resilience.

Bois du Laerbeek-Laarbeekbos is more than just the largest forest in northern Brussels. It boasts a rich past intertwined with the Dieleghem Abbey founded in the 11th century. The abbey wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a center of activity. Monks quarried limestone here. This limestone built the abbey. It even went into the construction of the Church of Our Lady in Mechelen and parts of the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula in Brussels.

The quarry’s story is fascinating. It operated until the 15th century. The quarry hit the water table. Flooding made mining impossible. The abbey transformed the site. Around 1600 a 5-hectare forest was planted. Over the next two centuries it expanded to over 100 hectares reaching the Molenbeek brook.

After the French Revolution the abbey’s land was nationalized. Speculators took over. The forest shrunk by two-thirds during the 19th century. Eugène Van den Elschen an Ixelles lawyer even built a Normandy-style pavilion in 1908. Today that pavilion is a restaurant part of King Baudouin Park.

In 1962 Jette municipality took ownership of Bois du Laerbeek-Laarbeekbos. In 1976 it was declared valuable. Then the municipality sold it to the Belgian State. Now Brussels Environment manages it. A part is a regional nature reserve. It’s also protected under the Natura 2000 Habitat Directive.

This forest isn’t uniform. A deep valley shows the quarry’s legacy. A 30-meter pond sits there. Beeches dominate reminiscent of the Sonian Forest. Wild garlic an uncommon sight grows here. The water is pure and rich in calcium carbonate. This creates tufa a rare phenomenon.

Typical flora thrives. Wild garlic forest anemones and bluebells are found. Calcareous soil fosters maybells primroses and moneywort. Bats including the big-eared bat and the rare mop bat feed here. The Brussels Ring’s expansion almost impacted the forest. But a bypass plan protects Bois du Laerbeek-Laarbeekbos. A new forest is planned nearby.

Bois du Laerbeek-Laarbeekbos is a remarkable place. It’s a historical site. It’s a haven for biodiversity. It’s a testament to the interplay of nature and human history. It’s a green treasure in the heart of Brussels. Take a moment to absorb its unique charm.
