Deep in the heart of Tuscany, perched atop a hill overlooking the Arno Valley, stands the majestic Castel di Poggio. This isn’t just any castle. Castel di Poggio has witnessed centuries of history, its stones whispering tales of powerful families, feuds, and transformations. The castle we see today, a vision of neo-medieval grandeur, dates back to the late 19th century. It was the Forteguerri family from Pistoia who sought to recreate the spirit of the original medieval fortress. They envisioned a castle that echoed the legendary past of the site. A past that included the Del Manzecca family, notorious for their banditry in the region. The Del Manzeccas’ reign ended when Florence, in a show of force, demolished their stronghold in 1348. Yet, even destruction couldn’t erase Castel di Poggio’s significance. From its ruins rose a new chapter, a grand manor built by the Alessandri family in the late 15th century. They adorned it with crenellated walls, a tower, and a chapel, marking a new era of prosperity. But the winds of change continued to blow. Over the centuries, Castel di Poggio passed through the hands of many noble families – the Girolami, the Bonaccorsi, and the Marucelli, each leaving their own subtle mark. The Forteguerri’s ambitious reconstruction wasn’t just a whim. They enlisted Giuseppe Castellucci, a leading architect of the neo-Gothic movement, to lead the project. Castellucci, known for his dramatic restorations, infused Castel di Poggio with his vision of the past. He sought to capture the spirit of nearby Vincigliata Castle, another Tuscan masterpiece. The legacy of Castel di Poggio extends beyond its imposing structure. It’s a symbol of the enduring power of history, a place where whispers of the past mingle with the beauty of the Tuscan landscape.
