What secrets does this imposing figure hold? Here, at the Ernst-Thälmann-Denkmal, a colossal bronze bust of Ernst Thälmann dominates the landscape. This monument, one of the few remaining relics of the DDR, stands as a silent testament to a complex and controversial figure. The Ernst-Thälmann-Denkmal was unveiled in 1986. It was created by Soviet sculptor Lev Kerbel. The monument was intended to honor the 100th birthday of Ernst Thälmann, the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Thälmann, a prominent figure in German politics during the Weimar Republic, was imprisoned by the Nazis in 1933. He was later executed at Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944. The DDR held Thälmann up as a symbol of communist resistance against fascism. The Ernst-Thälmann-Denkmal became a rallying point for official announcements and gatherings, especially on Thälmann’s birthday and the anniversary of his death. The 14-meter high bust, weighing 50 tons, consumed the entire stock of bronze in East Germany during its casting. It sits upon a pedestal of Ukrainian granite. Interestingly, the sculptor seems to have drawn inspiration from Lenin’s image when portraying Thälmann as a revolutionary figure. Following German reunification, the monument’s fate hung in the balance. A commission recommended its removal, and the bronze plaques with political slogans were taken down. However, the bust itself remained. After years of neglect and vandalism, the Ernst-Thälmann-Denkmal was finally listed as a protected monument. The city of Berlin now undertakes its restoration and cleaning. A visit to the Ernst-Thälmann-Denkmal offers a glimpse into the complexities of German history. It serves as a reminder of the ideological struggles and the enduring legacy of the DDR.
