Whispers of Jesuit history cling to Île Jésus. Stand here and feel the weight of centuries. This island the second largest in the Hochelaga Archipelago is more than just land. It’s a testament to resilience and transformation. Granted to Jesuit missionaries in 1636 Île Jésus initially bore a different name. It was meant to be a temporary designation. However the name stuck. The Jesuits’ presence shaped the island’s destiny for years. Later in 1670 ownership shifted. François Berthelot a king’s advisor acquired the island. Then it passed to Bishop Laval and finally to the Seminary of Quebec.

For a long time Île Jésus remained largely rural. Agriculture thrived under the Seminary’s stewardship. The Iroquois wars slowed early settlement. Development picked up after the French regime ended. It accelerated dramatically after 1950. Thirteen municipalities once dotted the island each committed to agriculture. They merged in 1965 to form the city of Laval a remarkable feat of unity.

Imagine the challenges of unifying fourteen distinct municipalities. The creation of Laval from the individual towns of Auteuil Chomedey Duvernay Fabreville Îles-Laval Laval-des-Rapides Laval-Ouest Laval-sur-le-Lac Pont-Viau Sainte-Dorothée Sainte-Rose Saint-François Saint-Vincent-de-Paul and Vimont was no small task. It was a true testament to community spirit and cooperation. From a rural haven to a bustling city Île Jésus has evolved. Its story mirrors the growth of Canada itself.

Today Laval a vibrant metropolis proudly stands on Île Jésus. The island’s past whispers through its streets. Its present throbs with energy. Take a moment to appreciate the journey. From Jesuit beginnings to a modern city Île Jésus remains a place of remarkable history. It’s a story etched in the very soil beneath your feet.
