The air hangs heavy with anticipation as you stand before the imposing gates of Rakunan High School and Junior High School. This isn’t your typical school; it’s steeped in a history that reaches back to the Heian Period, a time when Kyoto was the dazzling capital of Japan. Rakunan’s roots lie in the Shugei Shuchiin, an institution founded by the renowned Buddhist monk Kukai, better known as Kobo Daishi.
Kukai, a pioneer of esoteric Buddhism, introduced Shingon, a sect that embraced the secrets of the universe. He envisioned Shugei Shuchiin as a center of learning for the people of Kyoto, but after his passing, the institution fell into disfavor and eventually closed. The roots of what we know today as Rakunan were planted in 1881 by Shaku Unsho, a Shingon priest committed to resurrecting the spirit of Shugei Shuchiin.
He established Soko, an educational organization dedicated to Shingon teachings. Through the years, Soko transformed, becoming a prominent institution known as Shingon-shu Kyoto Senmon Gakko, a technical school for Shingon Buddhism. The school later transitioned to To-ji Middle School, its name a nod to its proximity to To-ji Temple, one of Kyoto’s most iconic structures.
After World War II, under the new educational system, To-ji Senior High School rose from the ashes, becoming the Rakunan High School we see today. This transformation wasn’t easy; the school was initially regarded as a last resort for struggling students. It wouldn’t be long before the school underwent a remarkable metamorphosis.
Shunryo Miura, the vice principal at the time, took the reins of change. He implemented strict regulations and control measures, but also introduced special academic advancement courses, attracting talented students from across Kyoto. The school’s reputation soared, transitioning from a lower-ranked institution to one of Kyoto’s most prestigious academic institutions.
Even today, Rakunan remains a beacon of academic excellence and discipline. The students here are driven, ambitious, and ready to embark on a journey of intellectual growth. Just beyond these gates, a world of learning awaits, where history, tradition and innovation intertwine.
