Hidden within Montreal’s vibrant tapestry lies St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Do you know the story of its humble beginnings? In 1899, Ukrainian immigrants, seeking a better life, began arriving in Montreal. They found work as factory laborers. Their hearts yearned for a spiritual home. In 1902, the first Mass in their rite was celebrated in a nearby Oblate church. Visiting priests, often traveling from Winnipeg to Europe, nurtured their faith. St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church became a beacon of hope.

St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church traces its roots back to 1911. Metropolitan Andriy Sheptytsky, who later became a martyr under Soviet rule, spearheaded the initiative to build a church. Services were initially held at St. Anthony of Padua Franciscan Church. The land for St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church was purchased in 1912. World War I brought hardship to the burgeoning community. Many Ukrainians were unjustly interned in camps due to their homeland’s Austrian ties.

Despite these trials, the community persevered. In 1916, plans were made for a grand church. Due to wartime constraints, only a basement church was built. It opened its doors on Easter Sunday, 1917. The parish hall was completed in 1930. St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church continued to grow. The original basement church was replaced in 1954 with the present structure. This was overseen by Father Nicholas Kushniryk.

St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church is a beautiful example of Byzantine architecture. Its iconic towers and ornate interior reflect the rich traditions of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The magnificent iconostasis, a nine-foot-tall screen adorned with icons, separates the apse from the chancel. Its unique grapevine motif allows the congregation to see into the sanctuary. Byzantine-style icons and murals adorn the walls and ceiling. They depict saints, Ukrainian royalty, and scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary. A poignant mural portrays the martyred Ukrainian Episcopate, including Metropolitan Sheptytsky and Bishop Budka. St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church stands as a symbol of faith and cultural preservation. It serves as a vital link to the Ukrainian heritage. It welcomes all to experience the beauty and richness of the Byzantine tradition.
