In 1975, the HKBP granted independence. This marked the beginning of Huria Kristen Batak Protestan Angkola. The official recognition came on August 1, 1976.
The path wasn’t without its challenges. Internal conflicts led to a split in 1982. A faction formed Gereja Protestan Angkola. However, reconciliation prevailed. In 1988, the two factions reunited. They adopted the name Gereja Kristen Protestan Angkola.
GKPA’s influence extends beyond Batam. Its headquarters are in Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra. The church has roughly 34.390 members. These members are spread across Indonesia. Angkola has the highest concentration of members.
