Heilig Kreuz began as the Dominikanerinnenkloster Regensburg in 1233. Dedicated to the Holy Cross, it faced the tumultuous times of secularization. While many religious institutions crumbled, Heilig Kreuz stood defiant. Its survival is a testament to the ingenuity of the nuns. They established a girls’ school in 1803. This clever move ensured the continuation of Heilig Kreuz. It thrives to this day. Inside the church, the artistry of the Rokoko period comes alive. Simon Sorg’s masterful touch is evident in the high altar. It beautifully incorporates the original Romanesque crucifix. He also crafted the pulpit, confessionals, and the statues of St. Joseph and St. John of Nepomuk. Look up. Admire Otto Gebhard’s breathtaking ceiling frescoes and the paintings adorning the side altars. They complete this symphony of art and devotion. But Heilig Kreuz’s story doesn’t end within Regensburg’s walls. In 1853, under the guidance of Prioress Mother Maria Benedicta Bauer, nuns journeyed to America. Their mission led to the founding of twelve American congregations. These congregations trace their roots back to Heilig Kreuz. The legacy of this unassuming monastery has spread far and wide.
