Have you ever wondered what a “world-reflecting mosque” would look like? Here at the Jama Masjid in Delhi, you can find out. Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan, the same mind behind the Taj Mahal, the Jama Masjid isn’t just a mosque. It’s a statement. Construction began in 1650, taking six years, a million rupees, and the tireless efforts of 5,000 workers to complete. Shah Jahan envisioned a mosque so grand it would command a view of the world. Hence, the name Masjid-i Jahan-Numa. Appropriately, it sits atop a natural hillock on a plinth, raising it ten meters above the city. Three majestic domes of white marble, striped with black, pierce the Delhi skyline. Two towering minarets, also of red sandstone and inlaid with white marble, reach for the heavens. Enter through one of the three imposing gateways. The eastern gate, once reserved for royalty, stands three stories tall. The north and south gates, while only two stories, are no less impressive. Step into the vast courtyard, paved in red sandstone and marked with white marble strips to guide worshippers. Picture 25,000 people gathered here in prayer. The courtyard’s centerpiece is a marble ablution tank, with an ornate fountain at its heart. Finally, turn to the magnificent prayer hall. Inside, seven bays lead towards the qibla wall, each marked by a mihrab. The central mihrab, a masterpiece of marble inlay, is a sight to behold. The Jama Masjid isn’t just a place of worship. It is a testament to Mughal architectural brilliance, a symbol of Islamic power, and an enduring landmark in the heart of Delhi.
