The Viri Galilaei Church stands tall and proud on the Mount of Olives. It is a beautiful, ancient Greek Orthodox church, built in the 19th century. The Viri Galilaei Church is one of the lesser-known churches on the Mount of Olives. Why? Because it’s part of the Monastery of Little Galilee. The monastery is the private residence of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem. It is a place of peace and tranquility, where the Patriarch can reflect on his duties and pray for the peace of the world. The name Viri Galilaei is Latin for “men of Galilee”. This refers to a passage in the book of Acts, where the disciples were addressed as “men of Galilee” after the Ascension of Jesus. In the biblical story, two men in white approach the disciples and ask why they are looking up to heaven. They tell them that when Christ returns, it will be in the same way they saw him go. The church is a reminder of this event.
The Viri Galilaei Church gets its name from the men who appeared to the disciples following the Ascension of Jesus. The church is a place of great historical and religious significance. It is a place of prayer, reflection, and remembrance. I hope you have enjoyed learning about this unique church and its interesting history.
