But Romania also built closer ties with the United States. In 1973 North Korea wanted Romania to talk to the US. However Romanian diplomats did not want to hurt their US relationship.
There is a darker side to the story. In 1978 a Romanian painter named Doina Bumbea was abducted. The North Korean government took her. The possible reason was to provide non-Korean wives. These wives were for American defectors in North Korea. This would prevent mixed-race children. Romanian officials knew about Bumbea’s case. But they did not give it much attention.
After the Communist regime fell in Romania things changed. Ceaușescu was executed in 1989. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Romania rejected the ideas still promoted in North Korea. Instead Romania became allies with North Korea’s rivals. They established relations with South Korea in 1990. Romania joined NATO in 2004. It entered the European Union in 2007. Despite these changes some ties remain especially in education.
The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry has expressed concerns. This happened after North Korea’s hydrogen bomb test in January 2016. They said it was a challenge to peace in the region.
In October 2021 Romania closed its embassy in North Korea. This may be temporary. The reason was strict COVID-19 measures. These measures made it hard to operate the embassy. Entry and exit to North Korea became very complicated. Before this Romania was the only EU country. It had a diplomatic embassy in North Korea. The embassy might not reopen due to high costs.
