Initially a vacant lot Yellowstone Municipal Park’s story begins with a dream. A dream of green spaces in a concrete jungle. It wasn’t always a park. The land was slated for apartments. But City Council Member Arthur Katzman had other plans. He envisioned a place for the community a true neighborhood gem. His vision faced opposition. Some wanted a simple cement playground. Local residents however longed for trees grass and a place to relax. Their voices were heard. Yellowstone Municipal Park opened on May 27 1968. It was initially known as Yellowstone Park a name reflecting the nearby boulevard. The origin of that boulevard’s name remains a mystery. It appeared on Queens maps as early as 1915. The park’s dedication to the community continued. In 1973 a community room was built thanks to local volunteers McDonald’s and construction funds. Then in 1996 a major renovation transformed the park. Council Member Karen Koslowitz secured $800000 for new equipment safety surfacing and landscaping. Basketball courts game tables benches and a playground for the youngest visitors were added. The Arthur J. Katzman Playground a tribute to the park’s founder features seal animal art a drinking fountain and safe play equipment. A winding path leads to a quiet hilltop seating area a perfect place for reflection. Yellowstone Municipal Park is more than just a park. It’s a testament to community spirit perseverance and the transformative power of green spaces. It’s a place where dreams become reality where the community thrives and where the echoes of Arthur Katzman’s vision continue to resonate today. Come walk the paths explore the playground and experience the enduring legacy of this unique urban oasis Yellowstone Municipal Park a true testament to the enduring spirit of Queens.
