Kupfermühle

In 1612, a vision sparked to life on the banks of the Krusau River. Here at Kupfermühle, King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway laid the foundation for Schleswig’s first factory. Kupfermühle, meaning “copper mill,” quickly became a hub of industry. The rhythmic clang of hammers echoed through the valley as skilled artisans transformed raw copper into pipes, sheets, and everyday utensils. The copper mill flourished, reaching its zenith in 1914 with over 200 workers. The village of Kupfermühle grew in tandem with the factory. Charming workers’ residences, reminiscent of Copenhagen’s Nyboder district, sprung up around the mill. Today, these 17th-century buildings still stand as a testament to the village’s rich past. A small stream, the Krusau, meanders through the heart of what is now the Kupfermühle Industrial Museum. Ironically, this very stream played a role in Kupfermühle becoming part of Germany after the 1920 Schleswig plebiscites.
