Here stands the Chapel of Westminster College a testament to faith and education. Originally part of Westminster College in London it moved to Oxford in 1959. The relocation marked a significant chapter in the college’s history. The move was spurred by a need for more space and co-education. Westminster College was founded in 1851 by the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Its primary purpose was training teachers for Methodist schools. The original London location boasted a chapel and refectory within its grounds. Tragically the London buildings were destroyed during World War II.

The Chapel you see before you today is a striking feature. Its design blends elements of Oxford’s traditional quadrangles with a unique New England style. This architectural fusion reflects the college’s blend of British heritage and American Methodist influences. The large distinctive chapel is a key aspect of this fusion. Notice the stained-glass windows. They commemorate individuals who contributed significantly to the college’s life.

Think of the countless students who attended services here. They came from all walks of life. They pursued their dreams of becoming teachers. Many went on to have long and distinguished careers in education. This chapel was a center of their lives during their time in Oxford. The war memorials in the chapel vestibule honor those who sacrificed everything. They are a poignant reminder of the costs of war.

After the college’s closure in 2000 the Harcourt Hill campus became part of Oxford Brookes University. The Chapel remains open today a space for reflection prayer and quiet contemplation. It stands as a lasting tribute to Westminster College’s legacy. A 17th-century bell originally from All Hallows by the Tower in London now hangs in this chapel. It adds a unique historical element to this already rich setting. Step inside. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the enduring spirit of Westminster College.
