“Did you know Falkenberg was once a common pasture?” That’s right this area we stand in now Falkenberg in Flensburg was a grazing ground. Records show it was used as such as far back as 1594. Falkenberg wasn’t always a residential area. Imagine the scene. Sheep and cattle grazed peacefully. The name Falkenberg itself is a bit of a mystery. It combines ‘falke’ meaning falcon and ‘berg’ meaning mountain. Some believe falconry was practiced here. Others think it’s simply a descriptive name. The truth remains elusive. However the name has been officially documented since 1587.

Falkenberg’s transformation began around the time between the World Wars. New housing sprang up. Mostly detached villas and semi-detached houses appeared. The area’s development was undertaken by the city itself alongside Jürgensen construction and foreman Friedrich Tietje. This explains the alternative name ‘Tietjenkolonie’.

These houses many built of red brick reflect the ‘Heimatschutz’ architectural style. This style prioritized local materials and traditional designs. Many buildings are closely packed together. This was especially true near Strucksdamm and Timm-Kröger-Weg. The ‘Monokel-Siedlung’ or ‘Monocle Settlement’ is a particularly interesting section. This area attracted affluent residents mainly naval officers stationed at Flensburg-Mürwik. They were known for their sophisticated lifestyles. Many buildings here are now listed buildings.

Falkenberg’s growth continued throughout the 1950s and beyond. Row houses and apartment buildings were added to the mix. Today many lawyers doctors and teachers from nearby hospitals live in the Monokel-Siedlung. Falkenberg is split between two city districts St Gertrud and the one named after the nearby Mühlenfriedhof. A local landmark is Falkenbergschule a primary school that opened in 1968. Even a kiosk bears the Falkenberg name.

So next time you wander through Falkenberg remember its fascinating history. From a simple pasture to a thriving residential area. It is a testament to Flensburg’s growth. And its unique charm. Falkenberg’s story is a small part of Flensburg’s bigger narrative. But it’s a story well worth remembering.
