Why is Gaborone nicknamed “The Capital City Built on Virgin Soil”? Well, gather round, and I’ll tell you the story of Gaborone. Gaborone is a relatively young city, founded in 1964. Before that, this area was sparsely populated. The modern city was founded to serve as the capital of the newly independent Botswana. The colonial government was looking for a location easily accessible by rail and with a reliable water source. Gaborone fit the bill perfectly, and so it was chosen over the initial frontrunner Lobatse. Gaborone saw rapid growth in its early years, transforming from a small town designed for 20,000 people to a bustling city. This quick growth led to challenges. One significant issue was the emergence of illegal settlements, especially in the Naledi area. Initially designated as an industrial zone, Naledi quickly became home to a large population of laborers drawn to the city’s construction boom. Over time, the government rezoned Naledi to provide much-needed low-income housing. Today, Gaborone’s population has exploded, reaching over 246,000 people. The city continues to grapple with the challenges of rapid urbanization. Gaborone is more than just a political and economic hub. It’s a vibrant cultural center that has inspired books and movies, like Alexander McCall Smith’s “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” series.
