“Ever feel the weight of history pressing down on you?” Here we are at Saint James Catholic Church. It stands as a testament to faith and community in Los Angeles. Let’s step back in time.

Saint James Catholic Church has a history rooted in the early 20th century. The Catholic population grew. In 1957 it consisted of 1500 families. Father Morris initiated plans for a larger church. Sadly, he passed away before completing it. Father O’Gorman was appointed pastor. He continued the preparations.

During construction the hall served as a temporary chapel. The priests moved into a house on Vincent Street. Demolition of the old buildings started. The new Saint James Catholic Church was completed in 1961. It was dedicated on June 18, 1961.

The stained glass windows were envisioned by Father O’Gorman. Three windows stand out. They show the Transfiguration. Another depicts the Calling of the Apostles to be Fishers of Men. The third shows Christ Raising the Daughter of Jairus. These are massive compelling works of art. The Ten Commandments are also depicted in stained glass. They are along the sides of the church above the Stations of the Cross.

Father Gerald Walker began thirteen years of leadership in 1977. In 1990 Father Tim Nichols became pastor. He brought many changes. A parish-wide census counted 3000 families. A new electronic organ replaced the old one. The choir area was improved. All the pews were refurbished. The parish offices moved to the former convent. The hall was redecorated. The kitchen became the focus of efforts to feed the homeless. Lunches are provided by volunteers every Monday Wednesday and Friday.

In 2002 Father Jim Kavanagh became pastor. He was assisted by Father Joe Kammerer. He was also assisted by Father Brendan Kearney and Deacons Richard Shinkle and Bob Miller. In 2011 Monsignor Michael Meyers joined the parish as pastor. Father Jim Kavanagh retired.

Many new ministries are changing lives. These ministries help the parish grow spiritually. Saint James became a holy healthy and vibrant community. Parish improvements include a new canopy entry project. Upgrades were made to the church doors. Sparkling glass doors improve the Saint James Statue. Handrails in the sanctuary improve safety. The church is providing a welcoming environment.

Property was purchased across Vincent Street. It is on the south side of Pacific Coast Highway. The buildings will allow expansion of ministries. This includes room for youth and confirmation ministry. The possibilities seem endless. An adoration chapel is one idea. Baby sitting during Mass is another.

Saint James Catholic Church stands as a beacon of faith. It is a testament to community. Its history is rich with dedication. Its future is bright with promise. As you leave take a moment to reflect. Remember the stories etched within these walls. They are stories of faith hope and community.
