Established in 1961 the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health stands before you. A beacon of research and education it tackles global health challenges. This impressive institution boasts a rich history. It started offering undergraduate public health instruction in 1946. For fifteen years public health education was part of a wider University of California system. In 1957 UCLA launched a program leading to advanced degrees. The School of Public Health officially opened on March 17 1961. Lenor S Steve Goerke became its first dean. In 1993 a proposed merger with the School of Public Policy was thankfully rescinded. The school received a transformative $50 million gift in 2012. This generous donation from the Fielding family led to the school’s official renaming. Now it’s known as the UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health. The school’s impact extends far beyond its Westwood campus. It boasts an impressive network of over 11000 alumni across 71 countries. Students from 27 countries enrich the learning environment. Five academic departments Biostatistics Community Health Sciences Environmental Health Sciences Epidemiology and Health Policy and Management offer various degrees. These include MPH MS and PhD programs. The school offers joint degrees with other UCLA schools. These include law medicine management and social welfare. Faculty members are renowned experts in their fields. They’ve received numerous accolades including recognition from the National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine. Research is a cornerstone of the school. Faculty and students are engaged in projects ranging from bench science to policy analysis. Their work covers areas like healthcare access environmental quality and health disparities. The school also has Memoranda of Understanding with institutions in numerous countries.
