“Ever wonder where the name Hantay comes from?” It is a question I often ponder as we stand here. Hantay. A commune nestled in the Nord department of northern France. This village is part of the Métropole Européenne de Lille. Hantay may seem like a quiet, unassuming place now. But its history whispers tales of resilience and transformation.

The story of Hantay begins long ago. Imagine the 8th century. The inhabitants spoke a “proto-Flemish” language. Over time, the linguistic boundary shifted northwards. By the 10th century, the language landscape had changed.

Hantay’s story is also linked to Charlemagne’s wars. He fought against the Saxons. After finally subduing them, he deported them to different places. Some Saxons ended up here in Hantay. These deportees dug a canal to drain the water. This canal is believed to be the origin of Hantay’s name. The name appeared in records around 1123.

Battles and sieges marked Hantay’s history. In 1304, 1478, and the early 17th century, Hantay faced sieges. The village suffered abandonment. World War I brought further destruction.

Despite these hardships, Hantay persevered. After World War I, the Église Saint-Martin was rebuilt. The original church was destroyed during the war. Between 1922 and 1928, the new church rose. Fernand Dumont, an architect from Lille, designed it. Its style is neo-Gothic. The church features a tower-porch. It also has a nave with three aisles. A transept and a choir add to its structure. Jules Largillier, a glass painter from Lille, created the stained glass windows in 1927. They depict Saint Martin and the apostles. Preserved statues from the 18th century reside inside. A reliquary bust of Saint Fortunat is also present.

Today, Hantay is more than just a historical site. It is a living community. In 2022, the population was 1,249. The Hantayeurs, as the residents are known, enjoy a unique environment. Hantay has a strong dedication to preserving its environment. New green spaces are being developed. These spaces will create paths around the village. Twenty-four active organizations use the Gallicante sports hall. This space can transform into a cultural venue. Agriculture thrives here. Seventy percent of Hantay is agricultural land. The Bois d’Hantay is a nearby forest. Volunteers maintain this natural space.

So, as we stand here in Hantay. Remember its journey. From its linguistic roots to its role in war. Its transformation into a village. It has a dedication to nature. Hantay is a reminder of the past. It is a testament to the spirit of its people.
