Established in 1902 Cebu Normal University boasts a rich history. Initially a summer institute it evolved into a significant educational institution. It began as the Cebu Normal School a branch of the Philippine Normal University. The school was located in the Colegio Logarta building on Colon Street. The Cebu provincial government provided 200 pesos monthly.
In 1906 Cebu Normal School became an adjunct to Cebu Provincial High School now Abellana National School. It then relocated to its present site on Osmeña Boulevard. The school gained independence from the Philippine Normal University in 1924. That year it achieved normal school status.
Cebu Normal University played a significant role during World War II. The campus served as the headquarters of the Japanese Kempetai military police. Tragically it also functioned as a large POW camp. On March 26 1945 the Kempetai executed Filipino suspected guerrillas and American airmen on the campus. The liberation of Cebu began the same day. Allied forces landed on Cansojong Beach in Talisay. The United States Army subsequently used the campus as a base.
After the war Cebu Normal School underwent significant transformations. In 1952 the school changed its two-year curriculum to a four-year Elementary Education program. This marked its transition to a tertiary institution. A Bachelor of Science in Education program was introduced in 1954. The school’s name changed multiple times. It became Cebu Normal College in 1966 and Cebu State College in 1976.
Finally on June 27 1998 Cebu State College achieved university status. It was officially renamed Cebu Normal University under Republic Act No 8688. The university expanded rapidly during the 1980s and 1990s adding new buildings. These buildings house the College of Teacher Education the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Nursing. Other additions include the University Museum the Integrated Laboratory School and the Graduate School.
Cebu Normal University celebrated its centennial in 2011. The celebration was delayed as the university previously miscalculated its founding date. The National Historical Commission confirmed the 1902 founding date. Samuel MacClintock was the first principal.
Today Cebu Normal University continues its legacy. It remains a prominent institution of higher learning in Cebu City. It offers a wide array of programs across various disciplines. The university has earned recognition for its excellence in teacher education and nursing. It is indeed a testament to its enduring commitment to education and progress.
