Why is this unassuming square so important? Welcome to Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz. This seemingly ordinary square is the forecourt of Berlin-Lichtenberg station. It’s located on Weitlingstrasse in Rummelsburg. For years it was nameless. Then in 2023 it received its name. It’s a name etched in both sorrow and triumph.
Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz is more than just a place. It’s a memorial. It’s named after Eugeniu Botnari a Moldovan man who tragically lost his life here in 2016. He was the victim of a brutal attack. This attack stemming from a suspected shoplifting incident. He was severely beaten by a supermarket manager. The attack was ruled as racially motivated. The judge highlighted the hate and cynicism shown by the perpetrator.
The renaming of this square was not without controversy. Some media outlets focused on Botnari’s prior actions. Others championed the move as a necessary recognition of a life tragically cut short and a condemnation of violence. The renaming of Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz sparked debate. It sparked conversations about social justice and how we remember victims of hate crimes.
Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz has seen several transformations. Between 2005 and 2007 and again from 2011 to 2012 it underwent significant changes as part of the Stadtumbau Ost urban renewal project. This included adding a roof over the steps and ramp to the U-Bahn. A long canopy was added to the station building. Under this canopy three kiosks and bicycle racks were installed. This shows how the square has adapted over the years.
Further changes are planned for Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz. The district office wants to improve the area. They plan to increase green space. They want to make the square more inclusive for the homeless individuals. This shows how Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz is continuously evolving. It’s a space for remembrance but also a place of ongoing progress.
On July 18 2023 a mural was unveiled on the station’s sound barrier. This commemorates Eugeniu Botnari and other victims of racism and right-wing extremism. A commemorative plaque is also planned. This plaque will further serve as a reminder of the violence that took place. Eugeniu-Botnari-Platz acts as a powerful symbol. It’s a symbol of remembrance. It’s a symbol of the fight against intolerance and the search for justice.
