In a city brimming with history, the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church stands as a testament to resilience. The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church’s story begins humbly. In 1893, Fathers Otto Hilberer and Eugene Raess held the first mass in Chief John Quartey’s home on Accra High Street. This marked the beginning of the Catholic Church in Accra. The church thrived initially. The first baptism was held for Louis James Buckle in 1893. The first marriage joined Herbert Cheetham and Rose Mary Quaye in 1894. Tragedy struck in 1895 with a yellow fever epidemic. This forced the missionaries to leave Accra. The small Catholic community was left under the care of a lay committee. The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church faced a period of uncertainty.

The church’s journey continued with services held in various locations throughout Jamestown. These included the Sea View Hotel. One memorable Sunday, the veranda collapsed after a service. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. A turning point came in 1924. Father Joseph Stauffer, with the help of Mr. Bonito, purchased a cocoa shed on Derby Avenue. This would become the new home of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. The renovated shed was dedicated in 1925 by Bishop Hauger. This marked a new chapter for the church. The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church quickly expanded its reach. A primary school opened in 1931, followed by a senior school in 1933. Disaster struck again in 1939 with a severe earthquake. The church and school were damaged, requiring extensive repairs. Services moved outdoors under a palm branch shelter.

Despite these setbacks, the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church persevered. In 1939, the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) took over administration of the church. Their prefect, Monsignor Adolf Noser, was later enthroned as the first Bishop of Accra in 1948 at the Sacred Heart. The church became a focal point for significant events. In 1943, Father Bernard Sao Mensah, the first Ghanaian priest ordained for the diocese, celebrated his first mass at Sacred Heart. Later that year, Father Samuel Vanderpuije, the first Ga priest, also held his first mass at the church. The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church continued to grow, celebrating its Diamond Jubilee in 1968 under the leadership of Fr. Albert Kretschmer. The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church stands as a symbol of endurance. It has overcome numerous challenges to become a vital part of Accra’s spiritual landscape.
