From the rural hills of Gondar emerges the Igreja Velha de Gondar. This unassuming church holds centuries of stories within its weathered stones. Igreja Velha de Gondar is more than just a picturesque ruin. It stands as a testament to a rich history, intertwining religious devotion and local traditions. Originally built as a small monastic temple, Igreja Velha de Gondar showcases a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. Its construction date remains uncertain, but some scholars believe it dates back to the latter half of the 15th century, possibly linked to the dating of its patron saint’s image, the Virgin of the Cadeira, sculpted around 1460. This image, once housed within the church, now resides in the Igreja Matriz de Gondar.

Igreja Velha de Gondar’s simple facade features a main portal with three archivolts and a checkered outer frieze, a design described as “rural and autochthonous art.” A single oculus sits above the portal. Both side facades have pointed arch portals with two archivolts. Uniquely, on the right side stands a bell tower, the only one of its kind in Amarante, mirroring common Galician Romanesque designs.

Stepping inside Igreja Velha de Gondar, you’ll find a stark interior, stripped of its original decorations. A wooden ceiling covers the space, and remnants of later additions, like a 17th-century arch, hint at the church’s evolving history. Imagine the monks who once walked these halls. Picture the echoes of their chants and prayers filling the now empty space. Though its interior is bare, the Igreja Velha de Gondar invites contemplation. It serves as a quiet reminder of the passage of time and the enduring power of faith. The church, classified as a Public Interest Building in 1978, is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a living chronicle, patiently waiting to share its whispers of history with those who pause to listen.
