A high stone wall surrounds it. This is the Cemitério de Agramonte in Porto. It’s more than just a cemetery. It’s a city of the dead a place of memory. Opened in 1855 it was a hasty response to a cholera epidemic. The existing cemeteries proved unsuitable. The church burials were prohibited in Portugal in 1835. The decree caused widespread public resistance. Protests turned violent. The city council finally opened the first municipal cemetery in 1839. Initially demand was low. Much of the land was leased as a farm. The authorities received more revenue from agriculture than from selling grave spaces. Agramonte’s character changed in the 1860s. The city clamped down on private cemeteries. Catholic associations demanded plots. The cemetery underwent gentrification. New chapels were built. The middle and upper classes bought plots. They erected mausoleums and family vaults. The Cemitério de Agramonte is more than just a resting place for the deceased. It is a historical site a reflection of Porto’s past and its evolving relationship with death. Notice the chapel. It was built between 1870 and 1874. Architect José Marques da Silva expanded it in 1906. The Byzantine-style frescoes are the work of Italian painter Silvestro Silvestri. They were completed in 1910. The cemetery contains private cemeteries of three religious orders. These are the Carmelites the Order of Friars Minor and the Trinitarians. They negotiated with the city council for private areas. They needed them to replace their own cemeteries that were threatened with closure. The Cemitério de Agramonte holds a memorial to the 120 victims of a fire. The fire destroyed the Teatro Baquet in 1888. The memorial is constructed from pieces of the theater. Many well-known people are buried here. Archaeologist António Augusto da Rocha Peixoto rests here. So does cellist Guilhermina Suggia. Filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira is also buried here. The tombs are a collection of Portuguese sculptural work. They are representative of the artistry of the era. The Cemitério de Agramonte is a place of reflection and remembrance. It’s a testament to the lives lived and the legacies left behind. It’s a unique glimpse into Porto’s history. The stories whispered among the tombs continue to resonate. They speak volumes about life death and the enduring power of memory. The heat is intense the sun is high. The light dazzles off white marble and grey stone. Shadows deepen around many tombs and memorials. They are hard to photograph. The Cemitério de Agramonte is a treasure waiting to be discovered.
