“Was Camões blind or just visionary?” I ask. Right here stands the Luís de Camões Bust. It commemorates Portugal’s national poet.

Luís Vaz de Camões was born in Lisbon in 1524. He came from a declining noble family. His life involved much travel. He lived in India, Africa, and Macau.

Camões lost his right eye in North Africa during military service at twenty-four. Some called him “Monocular poet”. While in Goa, he wrote “The Navigator”. It offended the Governor of India. This resulted in him being sent to Macau. After two years in Macau, a debt lawsuit recalled him to Goa. After more twists, he returned to Lisbon. He died there in poverty in June 1580.

Camões is most famous for his epic poem “The Lusiads”. He completed it in 1556 but published it in 1572. The poem celebrates Vasco da Gama’s discovery of the sea route to India. It glorifies the Portuguese people. Camões wrote this masterpiece partly during his time in Macau. He found inspiration in a hidden grotto.

“The Lusiads” consists of ten cantos. It contains 1,102 stanzas. It presents a fantastical interpretation of 15th and 16th-century voyages. It’s considered the most important work in Portuguese literature. Another Chinese translation of the said poem named “The Soul of Portugal”.

Camões also wrote lyric poems, aphorisms, and sonnets. He wrote plays too including translated works like “Filodemo”. His literary achievements gave him a high position in Portuguese literature history.

June 10th is Portugal Day. It commemorates Camões’ death anniversary. Macau used to hold grand celebrations. Schools presented flowers to Camões’ statue. Celebrities gave speeches. The Macau governor participated. Military parades occurred. Cocktail parties entertained guests. Today, only the flower-presenting ceremony remains.

The Luís de Camões Bust before you represents more than a poet. It symbolizes Portuguese literature and national pride. Irene Vilar created this bronze sculpture. It serves as a lasting tribute to a great writer. The bronze bust of Camões placed in front of the Grotto, casted in the Manuel Maria Pinheiro production line.
