Chua Huong Do is more than a pagoda. It’s a sprawling complex of Buddhist temples and shrines nestled within the limestone Huong Tich mountains. Legend speaks of a monk discovering this sacred site over 2000 years ago. He named it after a Tibetan mountain where Buddha practiced asceticism. The main pilgrimage season explodes into life during the Huong Pagoda festival. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims journey here from across Vietnam. The festival officially begins on the 15th day of the first lunar month but the peak lasts from mid-January to mid-March.
Imagine the journey. You arrive at Ben Duc Pier. Thousands of rowboats bob on the Yen Vi Stream. A one-hour boat trip is a highlight for many. The water reflects the mountains and rice paddies. Phoenix Mountain and Doi Cheo Mountain rise to the left. To the right stands Ngu Nhac Mountain and Trinh Temple.
Then you reach Thien Tru Pagoda. This 18th-century structure is known as the Outer Pagoda. It boasts the impressive Thuy Tien tower a granite monolith. Local lore imagines the rock formations here as chefs working in a heavenly kitchen hence the name Thien Tru meaning Heaven Kitchen.
Afterward the climb to Huong Tich Grotto begins. Hundreds of stone steps lead to the entrance. A further descent of 120 steps takes you into the cave. This is the Inner Temple Chua Trong the heart of the Perfume Pagoda. The cave mouth resembles a dragon’s mouth. Inside you’ll find a cool dim atmosphere. Impressive rock formations are all around. The most famous is the Avalokitesvara statue carved from emerald stone and placed on a lotus. This was crafted in 1793. A 1.24-meter bronze bell cast in 1655 also resides here.
