Is it possible for a place to be both a historical landmark and a vibrant residential area? That is Friesischer Berg in Flensburg. It is a district brimming with stories.

Friesischer Berg, or Friserbjerg in Danish, is a part of Flensburg that sits above the church of St. Nikolai. It stretches from the edge of Flensburg’s city center to Handewitt. Today, let’s explore Friesischer Berg together.

In the Middle Ages, much of this area was Flensburg’s undeveloped city field. Legend says the five bad lords caused the city to have this large, open space. After Flensburg’s city wall was built, Friesischer Berg remained unfortified above the city. Wallanlagen, or ramparts, were later built to protect the city.

One of the oldest landmarks is the Grabhügel Friedenshügel, a historic burial mound. The Exe, a festival and gathering place, is another site that has been here for centuries. Museumsberg emerged near the end of the 19th century. The old water tower was erected between 1901 and 1902. The Friedenshügel cemetery was created in 1911.

Many of these structures still stand today. Quite a few have been recognized as cultural monuments. In the eastern part of Friesischer Berg near the city center, old buildings dominate the streetscape. However, as you move west, you’ll see post-war buildings and modern architecture.

Today, Bundesstraße 199 runs east to west through Friesischer Berg. The Westtangente runs north to south. Near the border with Handewitt lies Schäferhaus, a small area included in the district. Nearby Nonnenberg, or Margarethenberg, is also part of Friesischer Berg.

The Exe serves mainly as a parking lot. It becomes especially busy during SG Flensburg-Handewitt games when a bus shuttle operates. Flensburg’s annual fair also takes place at the Exe. Moreover, the large square hosts various events, such as the Tag der Bundeswehr and circuses. Many driving students have even practiced their first driving attempts on the Exe.

Museumsberg rises high above the city. When looking up from Rathausstraße, you get a beautiful view of the museum founded in 1876. The old cemetery and Christiansen-Park, created by the wealthy merchant Andreas Christiansen, complete the Museumsberg scenery.
