Did Lady Penh truly foresee the bustling city that would rise around Sovanney Mony Vong called Poun Phnom Pagoda? We stand here, at the foot of this sacred hill, and it’s easy to imagine her in 1372. Picture her discovering those four bronze Buddha statues and one Vishnu statue nestled inside a koki tree caught in the currents of the river. The legend goes that she, a wealthy woman named Penh, saw the tree during her ritual bath at the confluence of four rivers. She then orchestrated the retrieval of the sacred statues. Penh then directed the construction of an artificial hill, upon which a small wooden temple was built to house her precious finds. This humble beginning marks the origin of Sovanney Mony Vong called Poun Phnom Pagoda. This pagoda also gave its name to the city itself, Phnom Penh, “Penh’s Hill”. The pagoda we see today isn’t the original wooden structure, of course. It has been rebuilt and expanded several times, most recently in 1926. The central altar within the main pagoda holds a large bronze seated Buddha. It’s surrounded by vibrant offerings: flowers, flickering candles, and tokens of devotion. Look closely at the walls, adorned with intricate murals. They depict scenes from the Jataka tales, stories of the Buddha’s previous lives before enlightenment. Other murals depict scenes from the Reamker, the Khmer version of the Ramayana. Don’t miss the small shrine tucked away in the southwest corner, dedicated to Lady Penh herself. Often, you’ll find locals here offering prayers and food, a gesture of gratitude to the woman who, according to legend, started it all. As you leave Sovanney Mony Vong called Poun Phnom Pagoda, take a moment to appreciate the bustling city around you. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Lady Penh’s simple act of faith centuries ago.
