“A sign of hope.” That’s what Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Education called the founding of what is now Europa-Universität Flensburg. We stand here at the northernmost university in Germany. It’s a place with a fascinating history.

In 1946, after the devastation of World War II, the Pädagogische Hochschule Flensburg or Flensburg College of Education, was born. It was intended as a democratic new beginning. The aim was to emphasize the vital role of education in fostering humanity and morality.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilcox, head of the Education Department for the British military government, spoke at the opening ceremonies. He stressed the great responsibility teachers have in society. This institution committed itself to enabling students to act responsibly in a free, democratic, and social constitutional state.

However, the early days weren’t without their shadows. A former SS Captain, Hans Joachim Breyer, continued to teach history here until 1961, despite his past being known. Yet, the institution strived to uphold its mission.

In 1994, the Flensburg College of Education achieved full university status. It officially became the University of Flensburg. Today, it is known as Europa-Universität Flensburg EUF.

EUF has evolved into a dynamic university. Its focus lies on teacher education, European studies, and interdisciplinary research. It maintains a strong commitment to democratic values and regional collaboration.

The university shares this campus with the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. Here, you’ll find the Auditorium Maximum, or Audimax, the central library, and a broad park area. Student residences, a kindergarten, a sports and fitness center, and the cafeteria are all part of this vibrant academic community.

EUF emphasizes the promotion of justice, sustainability, and diversity. This applies to education, the economy, culture, and the environment. The university integrates intercultural and international perspectives. It aims to cultivate a community that actively upholds the values of freedom and equality.

The commitment to Europe is significant. It reflects the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law, and tolerance. Europa-Universität Flensburg prepares individuals to contribute thoughtfully and responsibly to society.

Interestingly, 75% of EUF students are enrolled in teaching-related courses. Democracy education is a state mandate of schools. The university enriches its educational science courses with European and non-European experiences.

“Europe” complements the traditional focus on teacher training and educational research here. A third focus is being incorporated. It is “Sustainability / Transformation.”

As of the Fall Semester 24/25, Europa-Universität Flensburg has 5,781 students. The university employs 677 people including 86 professors and 8 junior professors.

EUF has developed a unique profile through cross-border and border-inspired cooperation. They work closely with Danish Syddansk Universitet. They also offer joint degrees.

Today, Europa-Universität Flensburg sees the crises facing the world as a call to action. At the heart of its research and teaching is a vital question. How do we create societies worth living in that are also sustainable? The Europa-Universität Flensburg seeks to open horizons and prepare its members to navigate and shape a rapidly evolving world.
