“A prince-bishop’s residence you say? More like a time capsule” whispers old Frau Schmidt.

Schloss Geyerswörth stands before you a testament to Bamberg’s rich history. It wasn’t always this grand though. The story begins much earlier. In 1313 the Geyer family from Nuremberg built a city palace here. Their name gave the place its enduring title.

The Geyers left in 1585. Prince-Bishop Ernst von Mengersdorf acquired the property. He transformed the existing structure into a Renaissance palace. The current building reflects the 1740s restoration. A Renaissance gable collapsed on the north side. That necessitated extensive rebuilding.

The palace served as the prince-bishops’ city residence. It was their main seat until the New Residence on Domberg was finished. After that it became an administrative building. You can still see the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg near the fountain in the courtyard. A reminder of its past glory.

Schloss Geyerswörth has seen wars and renovations. The Thirty Years’ War inflicted damage. The palace has been used as an office building. More recently city authorities occupy it.

The Renaissance hall is a hidden gem. It boasts beautiful wall paintings and grotesque ceiling decorations. The palace stands as a reminder of Bamberg’s powerful prince-bishops. It is a symbol of the city’s enduring spirit. And the intriguing stories it holds.

Schloss Geyerswörth isn’t just stone and mortar. It whispers tales of power. It echoes with the footsteps of centuries. This seemingly quiet building breathes history. It shows how Bamberg evolved over time. Now. As you look at the palace imagine those who lived and worked within these walls.
